Compare gas boiler repair quotes before you book an engineer

A dropping pressure gauge, a pilot that will not stay lit and a dead display give an engineer different starting points. Gas-Boiler-Repair.uk lets homeowners and landlords anywhere in the UK describe a boiler fault once and hear back from up to four independent local heating engineers, so you can compare the proposed repair and the price.

Heating engineer checking the controls of a closed boiler in a utility room

Matching depends on the fault, the postcode and which engineers are available. You may get fewer than four replies. There is no enquiry fee and no requirement to hire any of the businesses that respond. Heating businesses are asked for insurance details and references when they join. Before arranging a repair, ask to see their current documents.

How it works

  1. Describe the fault. Say what the boiler is doing, add the make if you can read it on the badge, note any fault code and give the postcode.
  2. Hear from engineers. Businesses covering your area may ask for photos of the boiler, the display or the pressure gauge before giving a firm price.
  3. Compare the quotes line by line. Check the part, the labour, the call-out fee, the guarantee and VAT before you choose.

The boiler repairs we cover

Boiler Pressure Problems and Repairs

If the gauge keeps falling after a top-up, describe how quickly it happens. An engineer can check for leaks, a failed expansion vessel, relief-valve discharge or a misleading gauge.

Boiler Ignition and Pilot Light Repairs

Clicking, a brief flame and a lockout code are useful clues. They do not identify the failed part on their own: the ignition sequence, gas supply and condensate route may need testing.

Boiler PCB and Electrical Fault Repairs

Before paying for a circuit board, ask what ruled out a supply, fuse, wiring or control fault. A board must match the boiler model and may need its settings configured.

Boiler Pump Replacement and Repairs

A boiler can get hot while little heat reaches the radiators. A pump fault is one possibility, alongside air, closed valves or restricted flow. Ask whether the quote covers refilling and venting.

Boiler Diverter Valve Repairs

Radiators that warm during hot-water use can suggest a combi diverter problem. The actuator, cartridge or complete valve may need attention. External valves on cylinder systems are a different arrangement.

Boiler Thermostat and Sensor Repairs

Tell the engineer what temperature you set and how the heating responds. Wireless pairing, room-control wiring, boiler thermistors and circulation faults need different checks.

What makes repair quotes hard to compare

Two quotes for the same fault can differ because they price different diagnoses. One engineer may quote a new circuit board on the strength of a dead display, while another has found a blown fuse. Ask each engineer what they believe has failed and how they know, and compare the answers as well as the totals.

  • Ask what has been tested, not only what will be replaced.
  • Check whether the call-out fee is deducted from the repair price if you go ahead.
  • Ask whether the part is on the van, and how a second visit is charged if it is not.
  • Find out how long the guarantee runs on the part and on the labour.
  • Check VAT is shown and whether disposal of the old part is included.

The free quotes page shows guide price ranges for all six repairs.

Gas work needs a Gas Safe engineer

Use an engineer on the Gas Safe Register with the right appliance and fuel categories for gas work. Ask to see the attending engineer’s photo ID and check their qualifications. Do not remove the boiler casing yourself. An external pump or room control may need a competent heating or electrical specialist without involving gas work; the qualifications needed depend on what is being disturbed.

Gas-Boiler-Repair.uk introduces your enquiry. The engineers work for independent businesses, not for this website. Your chosen business handles the repair and agrees its contract, charges and payment arrangements directly with you.

Repair or replace?

An electrode or pump head may be worth replacing when the rest of the boiler is sound. A costly board repair on a boiler with repeated breakdowns needs a closer look. Ask about parts availability, the condition of other components and the repair guarantee, then compare a replacement quote if appropriate. There is no single age or price threshold that decides it for every home.

If you smell gas

This is a quotes service, not an emergency line. For a suspected gas escape in Great Britain, get outside without operating switches or using a flame. From a safe place, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. In Northern Ireland call 0800 002 001; for LPG contact your supplier. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone out into fresh air and call the emergency number before anyone re-enters.

Start with what you can see

“It clicks but never lights” or “the pressure gauge is back at zero every Monday” gives an engineer plenty to work with. When you are ready, fill in the enquiry form with the symptoms and the property’s postcode.
